4 Ways to make the most of your land

Land is a precious asset. If you are a landowner, you want to make sure you’re making the most of your resource. You might be assessing the use of your land to generate more income, to help benefit the environment or maybe even to embark upon a new project!

Yes, there are various ways land can be used for commercial benefit, but in this blog, we’re looking at ways in which your land can be used to simultaneously generate income, enrich nature and benefit human communities.

1. Create an orchard

There’s something very satisfying about wandering through an orchard, roaming through fruit-filled trees and indulging in a tree-fresh snack. It makes sense; this is the ultimate in natural ways to source and enjoy food.

Using your land to plant an orchard can offer many advantages. Not only can you enjoy ultra-local fresh fruit, without air miles or chemicals, but it can be something for others to enjoy, too.

Orchards are perfect for socialising. From apple picking events to cider making masterclasses (why not aim big!) to a beautiful back drop for outdoor events and garden parties, fruit orchards can benefit whole swathes of the community.

These services can equally be monetised to provide new, sustainable revenue streams. If you’re looking for other ways to use your orchard for more commercial purposes, perhaps working alongside a community venture, there are numerous opportunities.

For example, landowners and their collaborators can make saleable goods such as apple cider vinegar, juices, fruit compote, jams and preserves or dried fruits. Nut trees provide further opportunities and that’s before we start on fibres and medicinal plants! With a little planning, a small orchard can provide a treasure trove of opportunities.

2. Recreational purposes

Depending on your land and planning permissions, landowners may have the option to establish recreation-based enterprises. These could include:

  • Campsites (or glamping sites depending on your budget!)

  • Nature trails

  • Mountain bike trails

  • Arboretums

  • Swimming lakes

These are just some ideas, but there’s plenty more capacity for creative ideas.

3. Planting a diverse woodland

The UK desperately needs more tree cover. We often talk about the benefits of trees, but we simply can’t sing their praises loudly enough! They are powerful in absorbing atmospheric carbon dioxide, regulating climate, providing homes for countless species and dramatically boosting our own health and wellbeing.

Using your land to create a woodland is probably one of the most beneficial ways you can use it to give back to the Earth and the life on it. When a woodland is established, something that can be done much quicker the TreeSource way, it can be used for communities as well as being managed for income diversification.

4. Enhance your woodland productivity through agroforestry

Agroforestry is an effective approach to boost your woodland for financial gain from your land. Combining agriculture with woodland, agroforestry is a more sustainable way to manage land and harvest crops than the more prevalent mono-culture approach.

This kind of land management can provide higher yields (when all crops are considered), healthier soils, flood prevention, and shelter for farm animals and other wildlife. Bringing trees into the agricultural mix also introduces new crops, providing income diversification.
